How to Re-use and Create an Original
In the three part video series called “Everything is a Remix”,
we are told that everything we see or do is some type of remix. In the videos I
watched the artist who created parts of the video showcases some remixes as
well. An example where we see the artist copy something original and transform
it using certain elements to create something else original is when we see the
James Bond theme being used in part two of the three video series.
What the artist did here was use the classic James Bond
theme song along with the classic gun barrel sequence pointing at each new
example of different remixes overtime that have been used in film. Then when
the gun barrel sequence ended it changed into a red screen like what would
normally appear after the James Bond gun barrel and it showed the way how
vampires appeared on movies screens overtime, from Dracula all the way to
Edward Collins in Twilight.
I think what the artist did here is quite original in the
way he or she showcased new ideas. The artist took the use of the gun barrel
and made it look like a slideshow of remixes. Instead of directly copying the
original gun barrel sequence and using the gun to aim at a person. I think by
the artist changing what the gun barrel was pointing at, and what was being
shown helps a little so that it does not infringe on the original work’s
copyright. But the biggest thing that would help in not infringing the original
work’s copyright is by giving credit to where the selected work has come from,
not copying it completely, and by not using it to represent it in any negative
way.
I believe that creators should follow some guidelines to
avoid ripping a piece of work off. Some ways to avoid ripping off something is
by not copying it and saying it’s their original creation, another can be
creating their own version of something original and the only difference being
that it is of a lower quality. Other guidelines that should be followed should
be to always give credit to your source, only have what you are trying to
display seem like it has been influenced by something else and not just copied.
An example of this would be the slideshow in the video being influenced by the
gun barrel sequence.
To conclude I would say the artist created something
original with the influence of the classic gun barrel sequence. Do you agree?
If not tell me why not.
