Pygmalion: Eliza, A Slob turned to Royalty

Now I don't usually choose or think about the drama genre when it comes to selecting a movie, show or even a book. For the most part I stick to my favorite genres which is action or comedy. I often do not think of selecting any other genres because I am simply not interested in them and don't give them a chance. But for a change I had to give drama a chance because I would have to watch one for my English class, and I can say that it was well worth giving it a try as it opened me up to giving other genres a chance because they to, may have interesting stories just like how many action or comedic movies are interesting to me.
The drama that I selected to watch is called Pygmalion from 1938.

This drama was based on  mythological character by the name of Pygmalion which is where the title comes from. What Pygmalion did in the mythological story is that he created a sculpture of his ideal women and named Galatea. He was then so amazed of how beautiful his creation was that he prayed to the Gods to give it life, which was granted. To me that just sounds like another version of Pinnochio or it could possibly be how the idea of creating Pinnochio came about. Enough of Pinnochio lets talk about the Pygmalion as a modern drama.
In this story the person who plays the role of Pygmalion is Professor Henry Higgins. Professor  Henry Higgins is a professor of phonetics which is a person that focuses on sound and speech and may help others to speak properly and more clearly.

Now the character who represents Galatea in this story is Eliza Doolittle and it is from her where we see the biggest change.

Eliza Doolittle starts off as a poor flower girl who survives by selling flowers on the street. Eliza has no manners, is dirty and is not very well educated and people can clearly tell by the way she speaks. An example of her speech is this here "If I was doing it proper, what was you laughing at? Have I said anything I oughtn't? " Along with the improper English her accent was not normal, her pronunciation was terrible, and she would make some weird sounds. Due to this she was made fun of  her so called kerbside English and that because of it she would be left on the side of the streets forever with no good future. But this is where Professor Higgins comes into play of the transformation. Colonel Pickering who is an author and expert in Sanskrit makes a bet that Professor Higgins cannot transform Eliza into a well mannered English girl.  Professor Higgins takes on his challenge and says that not only will he transform her he will turn her into a girl that could pass as a duchess in Buckingham Palace. So for 6 months he went to work with Eliza.

Throughout the 6 months the two Eliza and Higgins went through a lot, from arguments, differences, and such. The first thing that needed to change was Eliza's cleanliness so she was given a bath, after 6 months of pronunciation lessons, and etiquette lessons were put together. In the end we were able to see a big difference in the way Eliza dressed, acted, and especially how she spoke. She went from bad pronunciation and bad English to "How do you do, Professor Higgins? Are you quite well?" Which is an example of the transformation of bad English to good English. Out of anyone in this movie Eliza's change was huge in how different she became, its as if a new character was being played all together.
